A mini digger is a large machine that can be equipped with a wide range of attachments, and can dig down to depths of 3 metres.
They are very cost-effective compared to larger diggers and have a higher range of mobility. This versatility means they are frequently used in construction and landscaping.
However, they also happen to be very expensive machines, it can be tens of thousands of pounds to buy one used. Instead, many tradesmen and contractors choose to hire them when there is a need.
If you hire a mini digger, it is likely you will be responsible for loss or damage to the equipment during the hire period. Accidental damage, fire, and theft are tangible risks that can occur at any time. Furthermore, it is usually a contractual requirement to arrange insurance for the hired in digger and provide evidence of this to the hire company.
With an annual or short term plant insurance policy, you will be protecting yourself from your contractual liability and will be ensuring you are compliant with the hire contract.
Should the worst happen, you can claim on your digger hire insurance up to £100,000 in repair or replacement costs. If you are responsible for paying continuing hire charges until the machine is repaired or replaced, then that cover is included within our short term hire policy up to a limit of £5,000.

More about usCan I take mini digger insurance out for demolition?
We cannot provide plant hire insurance quotes for hired diggers being exclusively used in this manner.
Many rental companies do not allow their diggers to be used for demolition either.
There are many construction projects that would require demolition as part of the contract, such as removing a porch or conservatory, prior to constructing an extension. Where this is the case then it is likely that a breaker will be used, and this can be incorporated within our standard policy cover.
Where the contract is purely a demolition contract then, this would not be covered within our policy, and such work should be undertaken by professional demolition companies.
Demolition by nature carries a substantial risk if undertaken, and diggers can be easily damaged by inexperienced individuals. For these reasons, we cannot provide plant hire insurance quotes for pure demolition contracts.
If you are unsure, you can talk to a member of our team at any time and receive comprehensive answers to your questions. We also have an FAQ that answers many more of your questions.
